Sometimes the best (and most affordable) gifts are made by hand. But if your creative juices just aren’t flowing or you need to jump start your inner-craftiness, try checking out some of these eight ideas for DIY gifts.

1. Miniature Books: At LostButtonStudios.com you’ll find step-by-step instructions along with printable templates for making your own miniature books. Use wrapping paper, junk mail or old calendars as the cover. They’re great for keeping little notes or writing down thoughts.

2. Cookie Mix in a Jar: Everyone loves freshly baked cookies, but sometimes by the time the gift arrives, those cookies aren’t so fresh. By making your own mix and packaging it in a cute jar, the receiver can have yummy cookies whenever they want. Check out this recipe from About.com.

3. Creative Coasters: Coasters are a great gift for a wide variety of people. Pick up cork coasters for just a buck or two and use this tutorial from Paper and Stitch to embellish them with your own creative flair.

4. Dog Clothes: If you like to sew, make a gift any pet lover would love: a jacket for Fido! Check out this free pattern from Circle of Crafters.

5. Salt Scrub: Make your own salt scrub by mixing Epsom salts and baby oil until it looks like very wet snow.  Add aromatherapy oil to make it smell pretty. Package it in a creative way.

6. Storage Crate: Laura Gunn came up with a lovely way to transform ugly plastic crates into cool containers. Print off her instructions, pick up some fabric and get to work.

7. Cookbook: Create, organize, and store your recipes in your very own customizable cookbook with TasteBook. A hardcover, full-color book with tabbed chapters starts at just $19.95. Put in your favorite recipes and pass them on to friends and family.

8. Pin Cushion: This one is easy enough for kids to try. Using scrap fabric, a round container and a few other supplies, easily create a pin cushion and pin storage container that anybody (especially seamstresses) will love.

I stumbled upon this item a few months ago and have found it so useful that I have since been recommending it to everyone I meet. This is a unique personal gift that you can give to a family. Any new family starting out or one that just needs to get organized can use it. The Life.doc is an attractive way to keep your life organized. Anything dealing with a family and home is kept safely and neatly in the beautiful red linen-feel clad folder.

The folder is split into 8 useful sections that can be filled in by printer or handwritten with your information. The most useful sections for me were In Sickness & Health, Insurance, and Home Sweet Home. But all the sections are quite useful and very cleverly put together on pre-organized forms. Included with your purchase is a CD, which walks you through the process of getting your Life.doc perfectly put together and printed out, if you choose.

Life.doc consists of 120 pages to be completed for storing all your family’s vital information. It is nice to be able to keep all your important information in one place and in order. Any family would love to receive this item as a gift. Not only is it useful and just about necessary, but it also is very attractive. They may have a hard time putting it away once they have completed it. Anyone looking for a unique gift for a family should check out the Life.doc from getbuttonedup.

A Little Bit of History

The Photofiddle.com website went online in June 2004 and not to long after the launch it received a bit of press from the Washington Post, USA Today, PC Magazine & more. The Washington Post called them “buzz worthy”, USA Today reviewed and picked them as the best, and PC Mag rated them 4 out of 5 stars. What really put Photofiddle.com on the map was when Oprah put them on the O list in 2006. Since then they have become one of the top sites on the Internet. Continue reading »

Zulugrass Jewelry by The Leakey Collection- A Gift that Gives Back

courtesy of The Leakey CollectionÂ

What better gift is there than one with a special story behind it? The Leakey Collection is a unique line of jewelry handmade from natural elements from the Maasai women in Kenya.  The jewelry is made from natural grass beads and hand strung. Philip and Katy Leakey, who live among the Maasai in the Kenyan bush, wanted to help their neighbors by providing work opportunities after a terrible drought devastated their livelihood.  They came up with an imaginative idea that would utilize the excellent beading abilities of the Maasai women using grass, an available sustainable resource, as the primary element.

Soon the women were harvesting grass, one blade at a time. The long grass was dried and cut into bead-size pieces and dyed lovely hues which were then strung into necklaces and bracelets. Hence, Zulugrass was born. Now over 1400 hundred Maasai women are making Zulugrass while continuing to live in their traditional life style, and they can use their income to better their lives as they wish.

Not only are these necklaces stunning; the Leakeys invest a percentage of the profits of sales to go back into the community.  Outreach programs that benefit the Maasai such as the Womens Health Initiative have been made possible as a result of sales of this product.  For information on these extraordinary pieces- visit their retail site, Leakey Life.
