When looking for a gift to satisfy a book enthusiast, you may want to consider an e-reader – especially if they enjoy electronics or like to travel. Thanks to the beauty of competition, some of the most popular electronic reading device makers have started to lower their original prices. Other companies are also making it more affordable to give an e-reader as a gift.

What is an E-Reader?

An e-reader (or e-book reader) is a portable electronic device that is made for the purpose of reading digital publications – such as books and periodicals. This type of reader is quite similar to that of a tablet computer, but is limited to the kinds of functions a user is permitted to perform. An electronic paper technology using ‘electronic ink’ creates enhanced readability on the screens. Other advantages include a longer battery life and ability to read in bright sunlight conditions.

Some of the most popular e-readers to consider for a gift include:

  • Amazon Kindle – Amazon.com is considered one of the most popular e-readers on the market with a line of products that offers an array of convenient features. The wireless connectivity allows users to shop for, download, browse and read e-books, magazines, and newspapers. The first Kindle was introduced in 2007 with the larger-screened DX model released in 2009. The Kindle Fire not only acts as a reader, but also acts like a tablet computer.
  • Barnes & Noble Nook – The Barnes & Noble brand of e-readers was based on using an Android platform that originally launched in 2009. The original device included both Wi-Fi and AT&T 3G wireless connectivity. The latest models of Nook include the Nook Color with a color LCD screen and the Nook Simple Touch.
  • Sony Reader – Sony released the first in their line of e-readers in 2006, which have evolved over the years. Current models need no power to maintain a static image and offers portrait and landscape orientation. The reader also has the capability of displaying Adobe PDFs, RSS newsfeeds, JPEGs, and can even play MP3 audio files.
  • Kobo – Kobo e-readers offer Wireless and Touch models. With the Kobo Touch model comes with an infrared touch-screen interface that retails around $129.99. The device offers 1GB of memory (or around 1,000 books), where you can also use up to 32GB SD card to expand your collection.
  • Pandigital – What started as a company that focused on manufacturing digital photo frames, now offers a line of e-readers, such as the Pandigital Novel Digital Book Reader that comes with a 7-inch color screen and Wi-Fi.

The Apple iPad is a line of tablet computers that enhances an audio-visual media experience by offering a portable mean of accessing books, movies, music, games, magazines, and web content. The size and weight of the devices are somewhere between a smartphone and laptop – making it a popular item amongst app-happy tech lovers and convenient gadget hunters. If you have a loved one that owns an iPad, you may want to consider some of the following gift ideas for accessories:

Leather Case

For the stylish businessman or-woman, leather cases for the iPad come in an array of colors, including red, blue, purple, pink, brown and black. Some cases provide a convenient built-in stand that makes reading easier, while others simply protect the unit during travel with a secure snap. Some options come with a strap for the shoulder that makes it easier to transport the iPad – especially during times of travel and when attending classes.

Personalized iPad Case

You could also opt to give the gift of a personalized iPad case. With My-Edge, you can design a customized jacket for the iPad, iPad2, e-readers, or other tablet devices. Using interactive design tools, you can import your own photos or select from a gallery of artwork to create a personalized gift for your iPad-owning loved one. If you do not feel like creating your own iPad case as a gift, you can simply purchase one decorated with the first initial of your loved one.

Stylish Earbuds

From Swarovski crystals to the colors of the rainbow, there are endless options for choosing a stylish pair of earbuds to give as a gift.

Touch Screen Stylus

A PDA stylus allows a user to quickly take notes or tap the screen of an iPad when they do not feel like using their finger. For some users, the stylus greatly increases their speed and accuracy when using the tablet. The end of a stylus is made with a soft rubber tip that prevents scratches on the handheld screen. Touch screen stylus also come in different colors, such as red, blue, silver, white, and black. Select this item as a stocking stuffer for Christmas time or filler for a gift basket with an electronics theme.

iPad Keyboard

The iPad comes equipped with a touch screen, but not everyone feels comfortable with this kind of technology and may prefer the function of a keyboard. You may consider purchasing a keyboard dock, wireless keyboard, or a Bluetooth flexible silicon keyboard – many of which offer an ergonomic design that helps prevent strain.

iPad Accessory Bundle

A handful of companies have created bundled packages of goodies for iPad users that may include cases, protection screens, cables, and chargers (for the home and car).

iTunes Gift Card

If you have a music or app fanatic on your hands, perhaps the best thing is to buy an iTunes gift card and let them choose the latest tunes they’d like to listen to on their iPad.

If you have a friend or family member that enjoys decorating for the Christmas season – chances are they like to incorporate lights into their displays both inside and outside the home. Animated reindeer that appear to graze in snow-covered lawns and larger bucks with glowing antlers are popular choices for the holidays. However, you can surprise a loved one with an early present by choosing one of the following creative Christmas light gift ideas.

Creative Animal Lawn Decorations

When it comes to Christmas lawn decorations, animals are a favorite option. From panda bears to pigs, you never know what you will find when looking for a gift. Dressed in a Santa coat, the Trim a Home Holiday Pig (shown) offers a shade of pink to the front yard of Christmas light fanatics. The lighted crystal pig is illuminated with the help of 150 clear lights. The lighting effect is enhanced by crystalline spun material that covers the sturdy pre-wired metal frame. The pig is easy to set up and store, and comes with spare fuse and bulbs. You can find this holiday pig at Sears or online, which can be used both indoor and outdoor.

Cartoon Character Christmas Decorations

One of the most popular animated figures to decorate the lawns of holiday decorators comes from Disney, where Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto come to life in lights. Other characters for your lawn include Garfield’s Odie the dog, Snoopy from the Peanuts Gang, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Sports Related Christmas Lights

For the sports fanatic looking for unique ways to express their loyalty, Christmas yard decorations that feature their favorite team in lights would make an exciting gift. There are Christmas lawn decorations that depict sporting scenes, including hockey (like this Ottawa Senators player) and football (like this Georgia Tech player).

A lover of Victorian history and literature may enjoy a lighted scene or just one decoration that depicts the time period. Creative Decorating offers lighted Victorian skaters (man, woman, boy and girl), animated horse, and animated carriage. Other animated scenes offered by the website include a waving Santa, three-car train set, and set of Santa and his reindeer.

If you’re a pet lover, then you already know the joy that comes with giving your companion holiday-related gifts. Christmas is a popular season where pet owners look for something special for their pooch, feline, feathered friend, or other bundle of fur. To get you started in the right direction, consider the following gift ideas for pets:

Christmas Outfits

Get your pet in the holiday spirit with a new outfit. A few ideas include sweaters (like the Twinkling Star Holiday Dog Sweater shown), reversible bandanas, reindeer antlers, and even a Calvin K-nine Holiday Necktie. Smaller dogs open up the possibility of having your own miniature Santa or elf running around the house.

Gift Baskets for Pets

Whether you make your own holiday basket for the special animal in your life or purchase a pre-made assortment of goodies, pets enjoy gift baskets too. For example, the You & Your Pooch!: Pet / Dog Gift Basket makes a delightful holiday gift. In this case, both owner and pet get to enjoy the contents, which includes a magnetic pet frame, dog memo pads, Munchy Bones, and gourmet dog biscuits.

Canine Stockings

Stockings aren’t just for humans, as pets get benefit from a Christmas stocking made just for them. During the holidays, it’s easy to find stockings to fit the occasion. Some of the items that you may find include plush toys with squeaker, rubber rings, rope toys, and rawhide treats.

Stimulating Bird Toys

Birds enjoy being stimulated on a routine basis and what better time than to treat your feathered friend to the challenging Brainy Bird Building Flocks Toy. Geared towards larger birds, such as parrots and cockatiels, the toy is comprised of colorful wood blocks attached to a cotton rope with the stimulating sound of a bell. The wooden shapes, sound, and chewing outlet will keep a bird entertained for hours.

Pet Bed

From eco-friendly bedding to a cozy memory foam pad for dogs, no pet will turn away from a new place to lay their head. If you’re looking for a product from a name you can trust, perhaps the Dog Whisperer by Cesar Millan Round Cuddle Up Dog Bed (shown) is a possibility. Filled with sustainable recycled polyester, this is also a choice that won’t place a strain on the environment. Cats also enjoy a place to cuddle and snuggle throughout the night. The Cat Cave Cat Bed not only accommodates cats, but is also a winner with small dogs and ferrets.

Crazy Gifts are Best for White Elephant Gift Exchanges (Photo Courtesy of Thirteen of Clubs)

Lots of holiday parties have them– white elephant gift exchanges. It’s festive and fun and can be incredibly entertaining. A white elephant gift exchange is a great way to break the ice with guests and get people talking. Not sure how to organize one at your Christmas party? Here are some tips.

Set Up the Rules

Let guests know ahead of time that you plan to have a white elephant gift exchange at your party. Set a spending limit. This typically can be anywhere from $5-$25. Just keep your guests in mind and what they may be able to afford. Be sure to tell them to bring the gift wrapped. That way it will be a surprise. When guests arrive, put the presents in a pile in the middle of the room.

Draw a Number

Have guests each draw a number. This will determine the order in which you open presents.

Start Opening

The person who draws number one will start. They get to choose any gift they want from the pile. Have them open the gift and show it to everyone else. The person who drew number two will then get to decide whether they want to steal number one’s gift, or choose another one from the pile. If they choose to steal number one’s gift, number one will then get to choose another gift from the pile to open.

Give Everyone a Gift

This continues until everyone has a gift– either one that they opened from the pile or stole from another guest. Keep in mind that you’re not allowed to steal back a gift that was just stolen from you. As the party host you may want to have some extra wrapped white elephant gifts on hand in case someone forgets to bring one.

Need some creative ideas for white elephant gifts? Usually the crazier the better, but do keep the crowd in mind. Here are some wacky white elephant ideas:

  • Cheap figurines
  • A picture frame with a photo of you inside
  • Half empty bottles of liquor
  • A funny t-shirt
  • A poster from the movie Twilight
  • Cheesy Christmas music

Don't Like the Gift? Don't Show It. (Photo Courtesy of TomPagenet)

Gift giving is rampant. It’s no longer just reserved for spouses and close relatives. Chances are you’ll get gifts from your neighbors, second cousins and your Sunday school teacher. And we can bet not all of those gifts will hit the nail on the head as far as what you want and like. A recent Women’s Health poll showed that 63% of women have faked enthusiasm for a gift they hated. If you find yourself in that position, here are some tips for getting through it without hurting anyone’s feelings.

Use the Right Expression

What matters more than what you say is how you say it. Keep your eyes wide open. Examine the gift closely. Stay focused on it for a few minutes before allowing the attention to turn elsewhere.

Choose Words Carefully

The gift may be so bad it leaves you speechless, but don’t let the giver know that. Have a few words ready to go. Say things like “I’ve been wanting one of these”, “I just admired this in a store a few days ago”, and “How creative!” Explain how you plan to use it or where you’ll show it off.

Try It Out Right Away

If it’s an accessory that your niece made by hand or a sweater your colorblind aunt Sue knitted, slip it on. Run to a mirror and look at yourself in it. If it’s a pair of slippers, put them on and gush over how comfortable they are. If it’s a gift you can use right then and there– do.

Give Them a Hug

Most people don’t give bad gifts on purpose. Give the gift giver a big hug, make eye contact and say thank you. Remember, it’s the thought that counts.

Follow Up with a Thank You

Sending a thank you to someone who gave you a gift is common courtesy. Write a nice note and let them know you appreciated their generosity. Because even though you may  not have loved their gift, you can still appreciate their kindness.

When you purchase sustainable and eco-friendly gifts for Christmas, you play a small yet important role in preserving the environment. As you shop for your loved ones, seek out gifts that are described as ‘organic,’ ‘eco-friendly,’ ‘fair trade,’ ‘sustainable,’ ‘green,’ and ‘recycled.’ A few suggestions include:

Recycled and Sustainable Jewelry

Nowadays, there is also a new crop of artists that create jewelry and other accessories out of recycled materials. For example, the Recycled Bicycle Chain Bracelet adds an edgy touch to any casual outfit. Today, jewelry is made out of many different organic, sustainable and recycled materials, including bamboo, bottle caps, dominoes, seeds, cork, and sea glass (like the Pastel Sea Glass Cluster Necklace shown, which displays hand-gathered materials from along the California coast.

Hemp Electronics Case

For the eco-conscious man in your life with an iPad, equip them with a stylish case that doubles as a sustainable gift made out of hemp. This type of gift is offered through a company called Eco-Nique. Other hemps cases offered by Eco-Nique include for the Sony Reader, Nook, Kindle (shown), and Casio Zoom cameras.

Fair Trade Coffee Sampler

Fair trade companies take into consideration the environment, workers, communities and the consumers when producing their products. Coffee is a popular fair trade item to add to your sustainable Christmas gift list. Coffee lovers and music lovers alike will certainly enjoy Larry’s Beans Fair Trade Organic Coffee, Rat Pack Set, which offers three 12-ounce bags of brew. The set includes Frankie’s Blend, Bean Martin, and Sammy Decaf Jr.

Organic and Biodynamic Wine

When you’re attending a holiday party and need to quickly bring something along as a gift, a bottle of organic wine will surely do the trick. Seek out biodynamic selections and winemakers that use certified organic grapes.

Recycled Art

From scrap metal to broken goods long discarded in the trash, some of the most beautiful works of art come from recycled materials. Made from found or reclaimed materials, the Recycled Metal Flying Pig Garden Art Sculpture makes a thoughtful one-of-a-kind gift – especially for pig fans.

Make Your Gifts Memorable (Photo Courtesy of craftapalooza)

You spend lots of time picking out the perfect present. You toil over whether to buy the crimson shirt or the maroon one. You stress about the decision of whether your grandma would like gloves or mittens better. But often when it comes to wrapping those lovely presents we just shove them in an old gift bag or pull out last year’s wrapping paper and hope there’s enough left on the roll to make it around the box. This year, resolve to put a little more thought into what’s on the outside. Here are some tips for adding flare to your holiday packages.

Stick with a Color Theme

Rather than adding a hodgepodge of wrapped gifts under the tree, pick a color scheme. It doesn’t have to be the traditional red and green, either. By sticking with your color theme you’ll create a cohesive look with your gifts and make more of a style statement.

Always Include Ribbon

A Christmas package without ribbon just seems incomplete. Stock up at your local craft store. Buy ribbons that work well together and on their own. Try stacking a thicker ribbon under something thin and sparkly. And don’t be afraid to recycle the ribbon once you’re done with it.

Head to the Office Supply Store

Gift tags are like earrings for a package. Don’t overlook this important accessory. You can even get creative with them. Simply head to an office supply store and purchase some jewelry tags. Embellish them with stamps, glitter, or even by stitching on some ribbon. Get as creative as possible.

Use “Green” Tissue

Instead of buying tissue paper, try something more creative, cheaper and more green. Put old, discarded wrapping paper through the paper shredder. You’ll end up with a colorful and earth-friendly alternative to tissue paper.

Put a Gift on the Gift

Use your ribbon to tie a small gift onto your package. Include a Christmas ornament, small picture frame or even a gift card holder onto the top of the box. By making the outside so appealing, you’ll build even more excitement for what’s on the inside.
