Mother’s Day is rolling around once again. If you’re stumped on what to get your mom year after year, don’t worry. Lots of people struggle with finding a gift for mom that will be good enough for the woman who raised you and gave you life. Here are a few tips to follow that will ensure you get mom a gift she will love this Mother’s Day.

Start Investigating Early

Surely mom drops clues every now and then that will help you find the perfect Mother’s Day gift. They may be subtle, but if you start paying attention and investigating early, you will be sure to get a great idea for the perfect gift. The next time mom says something about a product she loves or her favorite perfume, write it down. Don’t rely on your memory or you may end up getting a gift she doesn’t really want.

Don’t be too Practical

Moms are often the ones that do the laundry, cleaning, and organizing. But that doesn’t mean she necessarily wants a laundry hamper for Mother’s Day. Be careful about being too practical with your gift. Someone once said that you should never give mom a gift with a cord– that may be true for your mother, too.

Show Emotion

Mom’s like to know you appreciate their hard work. Don’t be afraid to let your gift or Mother’s Day card show emotion. When your gift has meaning, she’ll love it even more. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make mom happy as long as your gift is full of love.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

If you wait until the last minute, mom will know. After all, she knows pretty much everything. Let her know that you think about her and care about her by planning ahead, being thoughtful and not waiting until the last minute to pick up a gift that isn’t really personal at all.

Spend What You Can

If you’re pulling in a six figure salary, don’t spend $10 on a Mother’s Day gift. Although she won’t really care how much you spend, she’ll know if you’re being cheap. If you don’t have much money in your budget for a Mother’s Day gift, consider giving mom your time. She’ll probably love that more than anything else that you could wrap up in a box.

It’s something every mom wants– more time. But how do you wrap that up for Mother’s Day? There’s good news. We’ve got some time-saving gifts that you can easily wrap up just in time for her big day.

Time Waster:  Searching for Keys

We waste precious hours searching for lost items like keys and cell phones. Help mom put these items in their place with this galvanized metal key cabinet from Pottery Barn. It’s just $49 and fits a wide variety of decor styles.

Time Waster: Shopping for Greeting Cards

Buy mom a greeting card organizer like this one from The Container Store and make sure it’s stocked with some of the necessities: birthday cards, baby shower cards, wedding cards and congratulations cards.

Time Waster: Cooking Dinner

Mom spends a lot of time creating lovely meals. Help her cut down the kitchen time with a George Foreman Grill. The new George Foreman 360 Grill comes with 5 removable grill plates that are dishwasher safe.

Time Waster: Feeding the Pet

Think of all the time mom will save with an automatic pet feeder. There are a wide variety to choose from at pet-super-store.com. Make sure to select one that still works during a power outage.

Time Waster: Household Chores

If your short on money, but full of love, give mom handmade coupons good for completing household chores. She’ll cash them in when she needs a little relaxation or rescue from laundry, dish washing or bathroom cleaning. Just make sure you follow through with your thoughtful gift.

Go beyond the typical floral gift for Mother’s Day by giving one of the most treasured flowers out there – orchids. Stately and beautiful, orchid plants can perk up any room and there are some great ideas, types and colors available.

Orchids.Com is a cool spot for orchid lovers and those looking to choose from gift baskets, cut flowers and even an orchid of the month club. Tell Mom she’s special this month and remind her every month for the next twelve. That’s a lot better than the vacuum cleaner you bought last year. And it doesn’t matter that it was a Dyson. Sheesh.

For under $50 you can purchase a great potted orchid that will last for weeks at Orchids.Com, which if you’re a thrifty kind of person you’ll find it’s a better deal than $50 on cut roses that’ll die in a week!

1888Orchids.Com not on provides fantastic orchids, they offer a gift guide, gift certificates and an orchid blog. For new moms, a great gift option at 1888Orchids.Com is the “New Baby Orchids” bouquet on sale this week for with about $10 off depending on the bouquet.

So this week, think orchids.

“This is your life, mother”

A great idea for this mother’s day is a scrapbook depicting your mother’s life up until this point. It’s like a chronological tour of her life ’til now. The hardest part of this book will be finding all the pictures and keepsakes you will need, but you still have about 2 weeks to gather everything you need from aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and close friends.

Here is a list of basic items to get you started (these can be personalized according to your mom’s taste):

  • a scrapbooking kit (any craft/hobby store should have one)
  • Mother’s day embellishments, stickers, rub-ons
  • Memory and Date embellishments, stickers, embossing
  • Personal pictures (from her childhood to current) school photos, high school prom, graduation, wedding, following baby’s birth, vacation pictures
  • Mom’s favorite and best recipes
  • Mom’s accomplishments
  • Poem for first page that describes what your mother means to you
  • Her ambitions from when she was young (“I want to grow up to be”) and then what she became
  • Past cards from husband and kids (mother’s day, birthday cards, valentine’s, etc.)
  • Personal notes to mom from family members, friends and you
  • What your mom means to you page

The book should start from the earliest information you can gather to today. The setup of the pages will be left up to you, I use a similar setup as pictured above. The page arrangement in the book will depend greatly on how much and what information you have on each item in her life. This is a great site to get ideas on different layouts for your pages. This will be such a special from-the-heart gift, it is sure to be treasured and showed off over the years. Another cool thing to do, is every mother’s day from this point on, you could incorporate more parts of the book; displaying such items from the previous as vacations, special moments (births), valentine’s and Christmas. Once your book is complete, wrap it in your favorite Mother’s day paper and wait for the tears Winking.

Mother’s Day is coming soon – May 11th in fact! It can be tough to figure out what token of affection to bestow upon my two mom’s each year to celebrate and show appreciation for all their love. So last month, when I got a small catalog in the mail from Spring Hill Nurseries I was delighted and relieved! Whew! Flowers to the rescue!

The mailing included several flyers highlighting different varieties of plants as part of the One Cent Sale. Sorry folks, they aren’t giving them away but almost. For example, purchase one Crazy Daisy plant for $6.99 and get one more for just one cent! This particular plant is shipped in a 3” pot so if playing in the dirt isn’t Mom’s thing, then just purchase a pretty container at a local gardening center, plant your flower of choice, and fancy it up with a big bow. Voila – a beautiful lasting gift for Mom at an affordable price!

Gardeners everywhere are starting to salivate. At least, I was when I started flipping through all the different choices available in the One Cent Sale. My top picks are the Crazy Daisy, Sensation Lilacs, Matsukaze Toad Lily, Tenor Tall Phlox or the Golden Marguerite Daisy. I’m daydreaming about planting all of these in my yard… who needs a lawn, or a house for that matter, bring on the flowers!!!

Now the only difficult part is picking out just the right flower for each of my Mom’s. They are both very unique women with distinct taste. For my husband’s Mom I’m thinking the Golden Marguerite Daisy. They are lemon yellow blossoms and look like sun impersonators on tall green sticks. For my Mom, maybe the fluffy looking Crazy Daisy which is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face! I can picture Mom working in her flowerbeds and plucking off one of the blossoms to put behind her ear for décor.

One thing generally all women share in common is a love of receiving flowers. It’s like we are reminded of spring when the buds start to appear, that winter is over and it’s time in life to enjoy the sunshine again.
